Professional headshots are more important than ever. Here's how to get images that make your business look its best.

"I hate headshots." It's probably the most common thing I hear when someone walks into a professional headshot session — and honestly, I get it. Most people dread the idea of sitting in front of a camera.

But here's what's equally common: by the time we're done, those same people are saying, "Wow, I didn't realise I could look that good." That shift from reluctant sitter to genuinely pleased subject is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

Why professional headshots matter more than ever

In a world where AI-generated images are everywhere, authentic photography has never been more valuable. AI simply cannot replicate a true human likeness, and it certainly can't capture a sitter’s real personality. A great headshot does both, and that human touch is exactly what makes your team's website, brochure, or LinkedIn profile stand out.

A professional headshot isn't just a photo. It's the first impression you make on every potential client, recruiter, or collaborator who looks you up online.

The secret to stress-free headshots

The difference between a headshot that feels awkward and one that looks brilliant almost always comes down to the photographer. Working with someone experienced — someone who knows how to put people at ease and understands what your business actually needs — makes all the difference.

Whether you're a seasoned marketer who knows exactly what you want, or a new PA who's been asked by the boss to "sort out some headshots" with very little guidance, the right photographer will meet you where you are, and walk you through the whole process.

One size does not fit all

Before any shoot, I always ask a few key questions. The right headshots for a law firm look very different from those for an engineering company — and headshots destined for an online article need a different treatment than those going into an Annual Report. Context shapes everything: the lighting, the background, the expression, the crop.

Understanding exactly where your images will be used and what impression you want to create is how we get it right first time.

What to look for in a headshot photographer

If you want headshots that genuinely make you and your team look your best, here's what matters:

Someone who can put people at ease: a good photographer doesn't just press a button — they communicate and create an environment where natural, confident expressions happen.

Flexibility on the day: unforeseen things happen. The right professional handles them without fuss.

Business awareness: your images should reflect your brand, not just look "nice."

Fast turnaround at a competitive rate: because you have deadlines and a budget to keep to.

A few questions I often get asked about professional headshots

What should I wear for a headshot?

Wear something that reflects your professional role and feels like you. Solid colours generally photograph better than busy patterns, and it's always worth bringing a couple of options on the day.

Can headshots be done on location or only in a studio?

Both work well. Studio sessions offer controlled lighting and consistency across a team; on-location shoots can reinforce your brand's environment and personality. The best choice depends on how and where the images will be used. When shooting multiple individuals for larger businesses, it’s always best for the photographer to attend your office or location, that removes the trouble of having your colleagues and staff to leave your office, this will save you time and money.

Why can't I just use an AI-generated headshot?

AI tools cannot accurately replicate your real likeness or convey authentic personality — both of which matter enormously for building trust online. A professional photograph does both, and clients and colleagues can tell the difference.
